The Maine coastline is home to over 60 Maine Lighthouses. Maine takes pride in the preservation of its lighthouses with various groups and agencies actively assisting in this process. Below is a partial listing of Maine Lighthouses with links.
Lighthouses originated to warn sea faring boats of dangerous rocks and shores. Interestingly enough, the first lighthouse (Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria) was constructed by the Egyptians for this exact purpose... to guide ships safely with the use of lights. The Pharos Lighthouse of Alexandria, the first and tallest lighthouse ever built, was built in Egypt and completed by 283. This lighthouse helped to guide ships for over 1,500 years and upon completion, stood 900 feet tall. Built on harbors, islands and beaches, lighthouses act as a point of reference during night time and unsettling, stormy weather while providing safe passage through the fog and avoiding running into land. ›Baker Island ›Bass Harbor Head ›Bear Island ›Blue Hill Bay ›Boon Island ›Browns Head ›Burnt Coat Harbor ›Burnt Island ›Cape Elizabeth Lights (Two Lights) ›Cape Neddick(The Nubble) ›Curtis Island ›Deer Island Thorofare Light ›Dice Head ›Doubling Point ›Doubling Point Range Lights ›Eagle Island ›Egg Rock ›Fort Point ›Franklin Island ›Goat Island ›Goose Rocks ›Great Duck Island ›Grindle Point ›Halfway Rock ›Hendrick's Head ›Heron Nick ›Indian Island ›Isle au Haut ›Ladies Delight Light ›Libby Island ›Little River ›Lubec Channel ›Mark Island ›Marshall Point ›Matinicus Rock ›Monhegan Island ›Moose Peak ›Mount Desert Rock ›Narraguagus (Pond Island) ›Nash Island ›Owls Head ›Perkins Island ›Permaquid Point ›Petit Manan ›Pond Island ›Portland Breakwater ›Portland Head Light ›Prospect Harbor ›Pumkin Island ›Ram Island ›Ram Island Ledge ›Rockland Breakwater ›Rockland Harbor Southwest ›Saddleback Ledge ›Sequin Island ›Spring Point Ledge ›Squirrel Point ›Tenants Harbor ›The Cuckolds ›Two Bush Island ›West Quoddy Head ›Whaleback Ledge ›Whitehead Island ›Whitlock's Mill ›Winter Harbor ›Wood Island I hope you have found the information and links concerning Maine Lighthouses helpful.
